The Scottish Highlands in 1750 endure grievous hardships under the rule of an English king. Beautiful, golden-haired Maggie Macdrumin is determined to help liberate her fellow Scotsmen, but upon arriving in London, she's arrested and brought to court, falsely accused of stealing a man's purse. In a bid to save herself, she impulsively lays claim to a family connection with well-known Edward Carsley, the powerful Earl of Rothwell--and her family's worst enemy. The handsome earl is adamantly opposed to the cause of the Jacobites, and when Maggie is turned over to him, he sternly forbids her to continue her journey. Maggie, passionately dedicated to her cause, constantly crosses swords with the powerful earl. How the two will remain faithful to their kinsmen and still find a way to resolve the growing desire between them is anyone's guess.

The majority of this book focused on the historical aspect of that time period. It is a good demonstration of the battle between the Scottish and the English, with true love finding a way to overcome that battle. While neither Maggie nor Edward ever gave up their beliefs in their respective countries, they were able to find common ground and eventually fall in love, despite their differences. Unfortunately someone looking for a historical romance will get a lot of historical and not a lot ofIt took me a couple of chapters to get "hooked" but once I did, I enjoyed this frothy tale. Take an independent, feisty young woman from the Scottish highlands, mix with a handsome and wealthy English lord who happens to be the owner of her family's estate, season with the English fear of a Jacobite uprising and an illegal whisky distillery and bake in the hot political atmosphere of 1750's England. There are no surprises in this formulaic plot, but it was a fun read.
3.5 stars. I found the beginning of this book boring and the story progressed slowly. Then it started to get interesting and I found myself not stopping until the end. It's a slow read but a good read.
This was a classic romance and a nice follow-up to Outlander. I liked Outlander, but don't intend to continue the series. This novel takes place some time after the battle of Culloden. It was a fun, easy read with likable characters who have a few, but not insurmountable obstacles
It looks like you could like lost in Scottish "Lite" by this author if you were so inclined. I did like this one because it brought up areas of history that were not familiar to me. But the stories and characters are not worth more than reading a few of these--and it appears she's written many.
This was a good book but it dragged horribly! It started to get good about 2/3 through. It just dragged and at times it felt forever till the author got to the point! I would read another but they are way over priced for the drudgery.
Not bad. Kept my attention but easy to put down.
