This book is not a love letter, -- not to you, not to anyone. But I love this book. I absolutely adore it, -- not just the content but the smallness of the book, the feel of it in my hands. The paper, like the prose, is delicate and crisp. You slip into Hatty's skin the way one slips into a white, cotton dress: simply, matter-of-factly. And yet, there's something truly lovely about it. This book is painfully lovely in its candor, as if the narrator never realized she was thinking out loud...
I'm not entirely certain anyone else will appreciate this as I do. (I can't be objective!) All I can say is, Hatty and her still, small voice deserve your ear.

I read lots of reviews saying how beautifully written this novel was. Well, it was, in a way. But it was also dull and plodding and the plot was non-existent. There was no character development and I really didn't care about any of it.This book is not a love letter, -- not to you, not to anyone. But I love this book. Completely weird, dreamlike, surreal novel. I suspect the writing may merit *5 - there seemed much to tease out of the narrative and I think you could study it in great depth.Couldn't get into the writing, the alien, distant characters, the strange story at all, so *2 for enjoyment.
The writing is beautiful. The sentences are constructed with such care and finesse. But the religious elements turned me off a bit, even though the plot (such as it is) does contain a lovely bang right at the end. Worth a read. Very short. But not particularly compelling.

Published by Persephone Books. It is a book to be reread. Beautifully written.
The descriptions in this book and the poetical way English writes is a delight. The story is very simple and describes the journey to the island of her honeymoon by a woman who is also recollecting her life as she travels. The ending was perfect like a cherry on top of a bakewell tart!
