Chronicle Toward Books Barsoom Series (Barsoom #1-5)
Whatever you do, do not read all three books one after the other without pause. I did and by the end had developed an overwhelming urge to punch a certain Virginian gentleman in the face.Yes, the writing is from a different time when attitudes were substantially different to what they are now. Yes, these novels are an early example of the sci-fi genre so we can expect them to be a bit formulaic.
But after a while the whole "supremacy of man" schtick, (particularly white anglo-saxon man) gets a little bit tiresome. And it's made worse by the complete and utter lack of suspense. It becomes remarkably apparent very early on that Messr Carter and his friends are all but invulnerable while those who play the role of the villains will meet a messy, and terminal, end.

Great read!I had never read the full book before and all I can say is: wouldst that I could turn back time and find myself upon the red sands of Barsoom years ago!Loved all the stories of John Carter!
There are some interesting themes in this forerunner to science fiction as we know it today. There is far too much violence in these books and it is hard to believe that all these creatures are killed and yet the population is still large. A book where men are men and women are women. I grew up with stories of Tarzan and Disney attempted John Carter many years ago, but this is a good look back.
A PRINCESS OF MARS:This is a hard book to rate, because, like so many ERB novels, it starts out great but gets progressively worse with each successive chapter. I like the world that ERB creates here, and it's an interesting plot conceit, but the scientific elements are knock-your-head-against-the-wall stupid and the characters are so cardboard and two-dimensional they might as well be walking, talking pizza boxes. The action is wildly implausible, as is the fact that John Carter learns an
Fantastically brilliant Great story! Couldnt put this set of books down until finished reading! I look forward to reading the other 2 books that are part of this series as soon as possible. Edgar Rice Burroughs has a vivid imagination to say the very least. The further adventures of John Carter are willingly looked forward to
fantastic read especially since it has the first six books in the series in it.lookingforward to under the moons of mars anthology, and I can't wait for the movie this weekend.
Finally finished!! Read each book on a weekend and finished in a month! Overall, I enjoyed the book(s). However, I am so over the fact that the driving force of everything happening in the books was because of a woman. With John Cater as the main character of the first three books, I didn't mind so much. Especially at the end of the second book, my heart was breaking for him. But then with the 4th book-war?! Really? By the last book... I was just over it. Apparently, nothing else drives these
