Representaion As Books The Emigrants (Sławomir Mrożek - Dzieła Zebrane)
'The Emigrants', next to 'The Tango', is the most famous drama written by Sławomir Mrożek. The play is not only a wry sociological portrait of Poles abroad but an universal study of alienation as well.
The action takes place in a dingy basement out West somewhere. The main characters are a political refugee AA - an ironist and a profound critic of Polish reality (an example of an intellectual who is in love with his own monologues), and an economic migrant XX - a greed-driven ignorant.
The first spins fantasies of a philosophical masterpiece, which one day he will write, while the second is dreaming about financial autonomy in his native village. Their dialogue is like a duel in which AA and XX unmask each other. They strive tirelessly for freedom and paradoxically both become slaves of this idea.
