The Gold (The Magical Forest #1)
Ten-year old Amanda is constantly teased and tormented in school. Her home life is less than satisfactory where her widower father, often away on business trips, leaves her in the care of her indifferent teenaged sister. Worse, not a day goes by when Amanda doesn't miss her mom. To escape reality, Amanda creates fantasy stories, but when she discovers a talking golden pebble, her imagined world turns into a new-fangled reality.

Amanda is a fifth grader who is left home alone with her big sister Jane, for anywhere between days and weeks at a time. She's bullied in school, mentally and emotionally abused by her sister at home, and her father is hardly ever around due to work. Things finally start to change when Amanda discovers a true friend in the form of talking gold. With
The Gold is the second book I have read by Krista Wagner, and after reading Intent I had very high hopes. The Gold had hints of Cinderella - Amanda's sister Jane orders her around when their father is away. I really felt for Amanda straight from the beginning. The characters were very well written, especially Amanda and Jane, even Shane. I got the impression that as Amanda grew in confidence and as a person, The Gold also grew. But I felt there was a deeper meaning or moral that I completely

This isn't my first Krista Wagner book and it won't be my last because I've always liked her stuff. I liked Amanda and really felt for her from the start. I connected with her and just wanted to hug her and protect her. I also created fantasy worlds to escape my own world so I really connected with this girl. I usually don't like reading books that I know are for younger audiences but in this case, I didn't mind. In fact, I think adults should read this book. Maybe it will teach them something
A very good tale about a young friendless girl who finds a small stone. The ending is very unexpected.
3.5 starsThis is an imaginative tale which would be perfect for young girls. Amanda's struggles are relatable. Wagner gives insight into a child's mind as Amanda tries to navigate through loss, disappointment, bullying, among other things. The characters are well-drawn, the storyline descriptive, and the pace appropriate. Themes of hope and restoration are key.
