Narrative Conducive To Books Byomkesh Bakshi Stories
I had bought this book to relive those moments I had spent glued to Doordarshan and watching Rajit Kapoor enacting the role of Byomkesh Bakshi.There are very few English translation of Byomkesh bakshi stories available. I had already read Sreejata Guha “Picture Imperfect & other Byomkesh Bakshi stories” and wanted to catch a few more stories.I felt slightly disappointed with this translation. The writing is oversimplified, to an extent that it fails to capture the tempo & suspense of the original TV serial. I also believe that stories were quite condensed and didn’t capture the details.
If you haven’t read any of Byomkesh Bakhsi stories in English, then my suggestion will be to read “Picture Imperfect and other Byomkesh Bakshi stories” first and then if you want more then you can come back to this book. For records both these books have a different set of stories.

Quite captivating stories. The translation is smooth as silk. I felt like reading in my own mother tongue. The innate expressions we use in the Indian languages that are so unique of us are preserved very adeptly, like the phrase 'There was no dearth of hospitality', which mirrors the phrase we use in our own vernacular languages. It could have been written in many ways but it was written in a way that reads like common-talk, which I guess, was just how the original intended it Bengali. I wishThis collection has 7 out of the total of 33 stories that feature Byomkesh Bakshi. The Hidden Heirloom, The Avenger and Quicksand are engaging stories, the rest are passable. The translation is also not one of the best; other collections (containing different sets of stories) like Menagerie & other Byomkesh Bakshi Mysteries and Picture Imperfect and other Byomkesh Bakshi Mysteries are better reproductions of the original works.
Felt like watching the serial.With Rajat kapoor infront of my eyes along with ajith babu and solving the cases.
India's own Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson. While, I don't wish to compare, the stories are well conceived and well delivered.
a true classic . portrayed the old school charm of the city of joy in unbelievable way . and a source of inspiration for other Bengali goyendas (detective) .
I read this book in Bengali and also saw movies based on these stories. The writer translate this book with an expert hand. Highly recommended for those who love detective or thriller stories.
The Byomkesh Bakshi Stories is my third Diverse Detectives read in October.Written by Sharadindu Bandyopadhyay, these stories are classics of 1930s Bengali literature. Bakshi is a truth seeker rather than a detective and it shows. Rather than being interested in restoring law and order, he often lets the culprits go free, or indeed, causes their deaths! This was a bit unexpected, as, Ill be honest, I did initially read this as a Bengali interpretation of Sherlock Holmes.My copy was a collection
