Dorothy on the Rocks
In Maggie Barlow's world, reality is overrated. So what if her singing career has hit a sour note or she's no longer the ingénue that she used to be? So what if she drinks and smokes a bit too much or likes to chat with a fairy godperson who appears to her from time to time? She's the queen of denial and an actress to boot—she can just take on the role of someone she likes better than her sorry self. Regrettably, that role is currently Dorothy in the Little Britches Theater Company's production of The Wizard of Oz.
Dorothy on the Rocks is the story of a funny, lovable, totally self-destructive woman who, after a night of one-drink-too-many, wakes up with a strange man in her bed: confident, handsome, sexy, twenty-eight-year-old Jack. What happens next is what makes Barbara Suter's coming-of-middle-age tale so much fun. For when the make-believe is finally stripped away, our hurt, lonely, and very afraid heroine finally takes center stage and finds herself starring in a totally improbable love story. It just might be the role of a lifetime.
Hmm. How do I write this review. Well, I wasn't a huge fan of many aspects of this book. For example, I am a performer and a singer. You couldn't PAY ME A MILLION DOLLARS to smoke a pack of cigarettes and then go onstage and sing a show. Then add booze to that? NO. Well, Maggie does this almost every day. Its unreal to me and I hated it. I guess i just have a low tolerance for reading about self-destructive characters. She was funny, and I liked that she was a singer and a New Yorker and a fun
Very slow start. And middle. Its just the same thing over and over. The last 15-20% of the book was decent, though. Would make a good short story if you chopped off the first 70% of the book.

Great literatureThis is an honest to god AUTHOR! It is so good Id never have dared to read it. I have laughed and cried the whole way through and am in heartfelt love with everyone in it.
This book had me laughing through out it's pages. At the same time I also wanted to take the main character and tell her to wake up and grow up. The main character is an actress who lives in NYC. She's 41 but still playing fairy tale characters such as Snow White and at times this appears to cross over to how she handles real life situations. This book takes her through many misadventures as a single female in the big apple with the good, the bad, the ugly, and the sad.
My absolute favorite book. It came at just the right time in my life.
