Hortense Beauharnais finds herself rubbing shoulders with royalty as her mother remarries to become Napoleon Bonaparte's wife. As Napoleon struggles for power on the battlefields of Europe, so Hortense charts her way through the French court -- a chessboard world where the motives are jealousy and greed and the prizes are thrones of conquered countries. Despite attempts to retain her individuality, Hortense finds herself married to Napoleon's brother Louis, but her heart is with Charles de Flahaut, a gallant young officer. Unwilling to cross her stepfather, Hortense must wait and see if time will take her to her lover.

Commentary Based On Books A Rose for Virtue
I find this period of history fascinating - and I love Norah Lofts' work. By writing about Hortense, Lofts provides an unusual perspective on the character of Napolean and the events following the French Revolution. A little romaticised at times, but the characters are well developed and the author tries to offer some genuine insight into the characters and motivations of the key players.

This was the kind of great writing where I actually wanted to re-read some paragraphs and pages. Will definitely read the book again.

Even though this is the first time I'm reviewing this book for Goodreads, it is not the first time I've read it. However, it has been a very long time between reads and while I remembered it is centered around Napoleon Bonaparte's step-daughter, Hortense Beauharnais, I had forgotten most of the details, so it felt very fresh to me.What I am taking away from this book now is the degree to which Hortense was manipulated by the men in her life, with Napoleon looming large in that role. Let me

I loved this story. The writing style of this book is very similar to the way I think of and try to describe things in my mind and so it was very fluid and easy for me to feel very much at home with the characters and environment. I'm not sure if that makes it well written or not, nonetheless, it makes me want to learn more of the Napolean historical era. I'm not sure how many books have been written about Hortense, but the story is really one worth reading. Norah Lofts has written other

I liked the opening line not for its content but for the way it makes me feel like Ive just stepped into a room at the end of someones conversation. Starting in the middle of some action in this case a conversation is always a good way to hook the reader. While I like Hortenses first-person narrative, at times I had to re-read certain sentences to grasp their meaning. Its a good style overall, but it features an element of confusion. Or maybe thats just me.I liked how the story tracks Napoleon

I've read this book many times. I love it. Lofts tries to sugar coat Josephine's life a bit, to make her seem more innocent than she was... and also Napoleon. But it is a well written romantic story about Hortense and her life.. and her loves for Charles De Flahaut and Napoleon...
